Of course they are the best in doing this, but you too can be your own private investigator that checks on potential staff before employing them. Don't believe me? I know it's hard to believe, but listen up.

You see, ass difficult as it may sound, it's easier than you think. Many people have done it without the help of any background check expert and they have found very useful information that influenced their final decisions. Of course you won't dig too deep into the person's background but you can find out important information that may be enough to know the kind of person the employee will be or NOT be.

A good first step is to find out all the people the person has worked for in the past and contact them. Yes, a simple phone call to the past employers can reveal a whole lot of things about the potential employee. Don’t employ anyone that doesn't provide the full contact details of their previous employers. It’s the contact details that will help you conduct your “personal” background check on the person.

When you make the phone calls, ask all you can about the person from the previous employers. Many previous employers don't like to say bad things about their past staff, but if the particular staff is horrible, they just won't hide it from you. They would feel they owe you an obligation to save you from what happened to them when they employed the staff, if anything.

As simple as the phone calls are, they can save you from a lot of problems that would arise from employing the wrong staff.
